NASA announced that the space shuttle Endeavour took off Tuesday morning headed for a rendezvous with the International Space Station.

The space shuttle Endeavour with a crew of seven astronauts on board took off safely Tuesday morning headed for its rendezvous with the International Space Station. Led by Commander Dominic Gorie, the Endeavour is scheduled to catch up with the ISS on Wednesday night.

The Endeavour crew is facing the longest station-bound flight yet, a 16-day mission where the crew will perform five spacewalks to install the giant Canadian Robot, and deliver the first piece of the Japanese Kibo Laboratory. This new lab piece is about the size of a school bus. Additionally the crew will conduct a series of on-orbit science experiments.

Garrett Reisman will be staying behind on board the ISS as a member of the Expedition 16 and 17 space station crews. He will be relieving European Space Agency astronaut Leopold Eyharts who will be heading home on the Endeavour when it returns.
