Google unveils more applications for the iPhone though some might be a little disappointed with the loss of other features.

Google may be appealing to about 3 million iPhone users worldwide, but why not? That is a sizable market and it is growing rapidly. Google has now released an application that lets users access to search, Gmail, Calendar, and other popular applications through the device. To access the application, iPhone users can point their Web browser to Google's home page, which detects the Apple handset and Safari browser.

The problem to some is that the Google home page has completely changed for them and all of their news and other customizations are gone. The old iPhone version allowed users a fully customizable page allowing users to choose news feeds from the latest headlines, movie times, weather reports, stocks, and much more. But now the home page has the search box in the center, and tabs for Home, Gmail, Calendar, Reader, and More, where you will find the news. Not the old customized news page but the standard Google News page.

Google has been taking many steps to get in front of the iPhone users but also in front of all mobile users in general. However Google is soon to possibly bite the hand that feeds in their bit for the announced bid on the 700 MHz wireless spectrum when it becomes available in January. This move would seem to put Google on a collision course with major carriers AT&T and Verizon Wireless, neither of which is thrilled with Google's plans to open up the phone market they so preciously guard.

This all comes just after Google launched the new Google Maps My Location feature for mobile devices. This feature is like having GPS service on your cell phone even if you don't have a GPS enabled phone by triangulating your location using the cell towers and maps your location within a few city blocks. My Location is still in beta and works for many mobile devices including most Blackberry smart phones but it does not yet work on the iPhone. It is anticipated that the service will continue to improve and will evolve to include the iPhone in the post-beta versions.
