Microsoft has licensed Adobe's Flash Lite and Reader software for Windows Mobile platform.

Microsoft Windows Mobile users will be able to use Adobe's Flash Lite and Reader software on their Windows Mobile devices now. This announcement somes just two weeks after Microsoft announced that its upcoming Silverlight browser plug-in would be available to millions on Nokia smartphones. Microsoft is working on a version of Silverlight for the iPhone according to reports.

Just last week though, Steve Jobs said that Flash Lite was not a good match for the iPhone, that it was too slow and not "Internet ready." Silverlight is currently in beta and Microsoft said that it would be giving it to 1 billion students free of charge along with other software that competes with Adobe software. But for now, Microsoft needs something that is already commonplace on many handsets and Flash Lite is the horse it has chosen to ride for the time being.

This arrangement between Microsoft and Adobe may also be a way of Microsoft to say that Silverlight is a work in progress and not yet a major player. It may be a couple of years before Silverlight is really ready to compete in the marketplace on all handsets against Flash Lite and Microsoft may be doing the smart thing and biting off a small piece at a time by starting with the iPhone first and building a market base from there.
