Best Buy doesn't want to be the bad guy in the demise of the HD DVD so it will be giving a $50 gift card to everyone it sold an HD DVD to.

Best Buy would rather leave a good taste in the mouths of its customers rather than a bad one. And when the video format wars were ongoing, Best Buy, along with everyone else were selling as many of either unit as they could. Whether it was a Sony PlayStation 3 with a Blu-ray disc player in it, or a stand-alone Blu-ray player, or a Toshiba HD DVD player, retailers were selling as many as possible regardless the outcome of the high-definition format war.

Now that the war is over and the dust has started to settle, the retailers want to be the bastions of good will and of course protect their client base. for this reason many retailers have launched campaigns to make those customers happy that they bought the loosing technology in any way possible. Circuit City took back HD DVD players, quietly, even if used, and granted store credit for the full purchase price. But the only issue was that it had to be within 90 days of the purchase date and you have to ask for it.

The Best Buy cards will be sent out automatically to everyone who purchased an HD DVD player by February 23rd, when Toshiba announced that it was abandoning the format. The Best Buy list includes those who belong to the Best Buy rewards program, bought an extended warranty, or purchased their machine on the Best Buy website. Others will need to show proof of purchase to get their gift card.

Best Buy also said that it would go one step further if users don't want to keep it and use it as a standard DVD player, Best Buy will buy it back by way if its web site, http://www.bestbuytradein.com. This will even allow those customers to double dip by getting a second gift card for that sale though no trade-in price has yet been set. The players typically sold for around $400 though they were heavily discounted in December and January.
