Apple Inc. has announced that it will be releasing a 3G version the iPhone sometime in 2008. This means that where the iPhone currently connects to the Internet at slower speeds, the new model will connect to the Internet at faster speeds. This was one of the chief complaints of the iPhone in the early days of its release.
Currently the iPhone connects to AT&T's EDGE-based network for browsing and email data transmission. EDGE, or Enhanced Data Rates for ESM Evolution, and shows current download speeds of about 70Kbit to 135Kbit/sec range. AT&T's 3G or third generation network has only been deployed in a few major metro areas as yet but it has boasted of speeds of between 600Kbit/sec to 1.4Mbit/sec, a significantly faster download speed.
There is yet no word of just how much this change will cost the user who buys the new 3G iPhone and Apple refuses to speculate at this time when it will be unveiled. Some believe that the 3G iPhone will be ready for launch in time for Macworld though others believe that is unlikely and speculate further that we might see it hit the market by the holiday season of 2008. I guess only time and Steve Jobs will tell.
