A beta version of Google Maps was introduced this week with a feature called My Location that can provide many phones with a GPS experience.

Even if your mobile phone does not have GPS hardware, the new Google Maps My Location feature can act just like a GPS for your mobile phone. What the feature does is to first install Google Maps on your phone, such as an iPhone or my new Blackberry Curve. Then the My Location feature will use the mobile towers near the non-GPS equipped mobile phones to approximate the device's current location within about 10 city blocks.

It's not exactly as precise as having GPS software or hardware installed on your device, but it gets you pretty close. Its currently in beta so you can likely expect the accuracy to improve considerably.

My Location works for many web-enabled phones currently including Java, Blackberry, Windows Mobile, and even Nokia/Symbian devices and it is Google's hope to have it available for Apple's iPhone too soon. Apple has promised to continuously update and improve its features making it more possible that My Location will work on the iPhone once it emerges from the beta stage.
