“A Rose By Any Other Name”…could still be a WoW name violation.

Want to play WoW with your favorite GameSHOUT reviewer, it might be a little hard to find 'em.

Okay here's the deal...every once in a while I will get an email from a GameSHOUT Radio listener or site visitor who wants to play a game with one of their favorite game reviewers. Most times they want to play with Josh anyway so I can just say that he's at work. But sometimes they want to play World of Warcraft with Soulrift or I.
Now in order to facilitate playing WoW online with you all, we have in some cases tried to make our in-game names come as closely to matching our on-air persona's. So if you want to play with Soulrift, you will find him on Earthen Ring as Soulrift. His toon is a very high level character and it might be tough for you to keep up with him but if you can, you'll have fun with him there.
I have maintained a couple of characters on the Baelgun server, CaptMaverick, a lvl 69 'lock and for some of my lower level friends there, I have CapMaverick a lvl 27 mage. I also have a few lower level toons on Josh's old server, Boulderfist, but I rarely play them anymore.
Then I found out that Ilander and his wife joined Soulrift on Earthen Ring with a couple of lower level characters and decided I needed to roll a new one to join them and play with a few fans over there. This is where I ran into some trouble. When you roll a new character, you need to be sure that your character name is compliant with the server type and the naming policy.
I can have CapMaverick and CaptMaverick at Baelgun because it is a "normal" server, but on a role playing (RP) or a player-vs-player (PVP) server, you cannot have a name with a title in it. So when I forgot and named my Shaman CaptMaverick I thought nothing of it until I got the email from the GameMaster of the server. Oooops...my mistake completely. I immediately wrote WoW admin to ask for guidance but it seems that they are VERY busy with stupid requests like mine so it took them a long time to get back to me. So in the mean time, I tried CptnMaverick. Hey, "Cptn" is not "officially" a title for Captain anyway so "how could they object?"
Well object they did and I got another note from another GameMaster saying "change your name or else!" Well it was really their form letter simply notifying me of their naming policy. But I still had not heard back from WoW admin so now I was going to try going with my third choice, CapMaverick. Now I KNOW that they cannot object to my name starting with a piece of head apparel, and "cap" is in NO WAY an abbreviation for Captain. (And besides as many of you know, I used to be a police Captain so I earned my rank the hard way...lol.)
Well, you can surly guess what came next...yup...another email from another GameMaster telling me that Cap was indeed a title and i must change my name. By this time I bet they were really getting sick of my trying to slip by a name that was easy for all of you to identify and join me in quests, but this didn't seem to matter to the GMs. They are really by-the-rules-kind-of-guys-and-gals, as they interpret the rules anyway. I appealed the decision to WoW admin, though I had not received a response to my original request for guidance as yet, I figured it was worth another try. But now, I was not going to play this character until I received an answer to my appeal. Two days went by and I resent the note with a "3rd request" in the subject line. This must have worked.
FINALLY, today I got a note from WoW admin, but my status as a game reviewer pulls no weight as they fully supported the decision of their GameMasters and declined my petition to allow CapMaverick. This means that now if you want to play with me in Earthen Ring, you will have to look for me as GsrMaverick...unless they determine that GSR stands for "gunshot residue" and send me another email saying that it is a title.... Though we both know it stands for GameSHOUT Radio...is that a title? Hmmm...well I will let you know if this changes, otherwise, I'll see you in there!
